  • Theyyam is a popular festival celebrated in the Southern Indian states of Kerala, and Karnataka.
  • The festival has been celebrated in Kerala and Karnataka for over 7000 years.
  •  The cultural, customs, traditions, and rituals are ancient.
  • The whole performance of the Theyyam Dance Festival is executed by the lower caste of Kerala. This caste system was formed and structured by the ancient Brahmin society named Namboothiri brahmins.
  • The whole festival is quite patriarchal as it is mainly performed by males, although, Devakoothu Theyyam is the ritual which is performed by women.
  • The whole festival is performed in Thekkumbad Koolom temple.
  • The transcendent areas where the festival takes place are Kasargod, Kannur district, Mananthavady, Vadakara, and Taluks of Kozhikode.
  • In Karnataka, this festival is celebrated in areas of Bhuta Kola and Mangalore.
