  • The Rann of Kutch isn’t just a desert, but a cultural celebration, something that the Gujarat Government has successfully showcased for a few years now in its annual festival of Rann Utsav.
  • The Rann Utsav is one of the greatest festivals held in the Kutch district, primarily known for its extensive area of salt marsh (which is a part of the Thar Desert) known as the Great Rann of Kutch. 
  • The Utsav takes place for four months of the winter season, i.e. generally from November to February.
  • The Rann Utsav in Gujarat has many activities to offer for your entertainment, including folk dances, handicrafts, sightseeing, star gazing, and several other adventures.
  • Every year, the Utsav is driven by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL).
  • It is the Carnival of Music, Dance & Culture of Gujarat. It includes traditional Cultural Dance, Cultural Act shows, Camel Safari, Musical Moments, Live in Tents.
  • There are approximately four hundred live luxury tents built-up on the beautiful white Rann.
  • This Rann Utsav was first organized in 2006 by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. He aimed to create a new identity mark on the global tourism map.
  • Since then, this festival is celebrated every year in November at Kutch, Gujarat and the public, in large numbers, visit the festival.
  • During the festival, the visitors get the proper arrangements for transportation, accommodation, food & guide for sightseeing visits.
  • Around five lacs tourists, including national and international travelers, visit the Rann Utsav every year.
  • Kutch Rann Utsav is also commonly known as the White Desert Festival, as an enormous white salt desert lies within the boundaries of Thar Desert. 
  • The Utsav takes place at White Rann Resort, White Dessert Road, Dhordo, Gujarat 370510.
  • The Rann is about 7500 km2 (2900 sq miles) in the area.


  • Kutch doesn’t have a railway station.
  • The nearest railway station for Kutch is Bhuj, which is 70 km from Kutch. There are several trains from Bhuj which connects the major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Jaipur, etc.
  • You can quickly get a taxi or bus outside the station.


  • Kutch doesn’t have an Airport.
  • Shyamji Krishna Verma Bhuj Airport, or more popularly just Bhuj Airport, is the nearest airport for Kutch, which is about 3 km from Bhuj.
  • The airport connects to all the major cities in India.
  • In the case of international connectivity like London, Dubai, and Singapore, the nearest airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.


  • If you have arrived by train or by air, there are many buses available such as deluxe, Volvo, AC, non-AC, and sleeper buses, which directly take you to Kutch.
  • In other cases, it is quite convenient to travel from regular State Transport and Private buses connecting Kutch from the nearby cities like Mumbai, Surat, Baroda, and Ahmedabad.
  • You can also come by self- driving or by hiring a cab. Most of the roads are in good condition. The route offers you a great experience with the luminous landscapes around. You can click pictures on the way.
  • Since Rann Utsav is all about the culture of Gujarat, the visitors are served with Gujarati dishes as a part of their package. These meals include the basic Gujarati food like Roti, Dal or Kadhi, Curd, Rice and Vegetable Curries, Ghevar, Malpua, Dhokla, Papad, etc.
  • Apart from it, there are many food stalls available in Rann. These stalls include Kutchi Dabeli Kharibhat and Chakrada Pakwan.
  • There are sweet stalls available like Jalebis and dudhpak- a mixture of spiced milk and rice pudding.
  • More famous food options in Kutch include Dabeli, Pakwan, Gulab-Pak, Adadiya, Kachchhi Thali, Thepla, Locho, etc.

The Rann itself provides the facility of accommodation to its visitors. There are around 400 AC and Non-AC luxury tents of various sizes and styles available in the Rann, which are arranged in semi-circles. 

There is an alternative option if the accommodations at the Tent City are out of your budget. You can book other resorts and hotels in Bhuj or Dhordo, whichever suits your pocket.
