  • The famous Mewar Festival of Udaipur that manifests through colors is celebrated every year in the Hindu month, Chaitra i.e. March- April to welcome the advent of the spring season.
  • It is considered as the second World living Heritage festival of India.
  • This three-day festival is celebrated with great zest and dedication. The rituals and ceremonies of this Festival include several cultural programs, traditions, activities, and performances like classical dances, folk dance, classical vocal singing, classical music, and instrumental songs.
  • Udaipur has always been the governing place of the Mewar rulers, that's why the Mewar Festival is celebrated with much fervor in the city of Udaipur.
  • During the Festival, the city gets decorated at its best and the shops in the market place are illuminated with lights and adorned with decorations. Professional chefs from the city display an array of colorful presentations of food and beverages in Mewar style.
  • The womenfolk of the city dress up in typical traditional attire flaunting traditional jewelry and Mehendi on their palms and feet in intriguing patterns while the men are dressed in traditional outfits and wear special jewelry that signifies their masculinity.
  • This festival coincides with the famous Gangaur Festival of Udaipur which holds great significance for women. Married women worship Goddess Gangaur for marital bliss and good health of their partner while the unmarried ones pray for an ideal match.
  • The history of the Mewar Festival dates back to the time when this part of India was ruled by the Sisodia dynasty. According to history, Maharana Udai Singh met a holy man while hunting. The holy man was meditating in a tranquil state on a hilltop that provided a sweeping view of Lake Pichola. The man blessed the king and advised him to build a palace at that place. The king agreed and built the beautiful palace and founded the city. Since then, the festival and rituals associated with it are celebrated with equal amounts of joy and faith.
  • The local people as well as the tourists visiting the place have a gala time at the event seeing the Rajasthani tradition and its rich cultural heritage.
  • The ceremonies start with women gathering to dress and decorate the idols of God Isar (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Gangaur (Mata Parvati).  Then a procession takes place in which the women carry idols on their heads and pass through different parts of the city while singing and dancing. The procession comes to its final halt at the Gangaur Ghat at Lake Pichola and the idols are transported into special boats which then get immersed in the middle of the lake.
  • Watching hundreds of special colorful boats carrying the idol, sailing gently in the lake alongside the light is surely a delight to witness.
  • A traditional Rajasthani sweet named Ghevar is specially prepared as an offering to the Lord which then gets distributed among each other as Prasad.
  • When the ceremonies end with the completion of the immersion ceremony i.e, the religious part gets over, the people engage in various dances, singing, and other cultural events that unveil the best of Rajasthani culture.
  • This festival provides a unique opportunity for all to review all the living heritages of the Mewar and it is aimed to preserve and carry on the ancient culture, and traditions of the Mewar region.
  • After much celebration and enjoyment, this three-day festival culminates with awe-inspiring colorful fireworks in the night sky.
