  • Ambubachi mela is one of the most important festivals of Northeast India. It is celebrated every year in the month of June at Kamakhya temple, Guwahati, Assam.
  • The temple is perched on top of the Nilachal Hills and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Assam.
  • The temple consists of four chambers: Calanta, Garbagriha, Pancharatna, and Natamandiramong. One chamber leads to the sanctum of the temple which is in the form of a cave. There is a natural spring in the chamber that resembles the womb of the goddess.
  • Ambubachi Mela is a festival which lasts for four days and its prime festivity represents Shakti tradition.
  • The Mela observes a deluge of Sanyasis who perform their strict ascetic modes of devotion at the Kamakhya Devi temple.
  • Basically, the celebration is aimed at honoring the fertile richness of mother earth. The idea is to celebrate the menstruation cycle of goddess Kamakhya Devi during these four days. It is believed that the Devi goes under menstrual period for three days.
  • During those days, the temple remains closed. On the fourth day, the temple opens with great festivity and a grand ambubachi puja is conducted.
  • Due to its popularity, the festival is attended by numerous devotees, Sanyasis, and travelers in large numbers.
